Guidance for Submitting Solution Center Content

Teams, please follow the guidance provided in the document, Providing Content for the Building America Solution Center

Please submit your content to your research coordinator (Stacey Rothgeb), please contact her to confirm what you will be submitting prior to preparing and submitting content.

The Taxonomy

The Solution Center taxonomy is a spread sheet created to organize topics and manage content. When submitting content, please identify the taxonomy term (item number and title). Using the correct taxonomy item will help ensure that users can find your content using the Solution Center’s navigation methods, filters, and other search options. This is a living document and will continue to be updated. Feel free to provide suggestions on the current version to Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (theresa.gilbride@pnnl.gov).

The taxonomy organizes topics into the following categories:

  • Whole-House Building Science (WH)
  • Thermal Enclosure (TE)
  • Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Quality Installation (HVAC)
  • Water Management (WM)
  • Water Heating (WH)
  • Lighting and Appliances (LA)
  • Miscellaneous Electric Loads (MEL)
  • Design Strategies (DS)
  • Business Processes (BP)
  • Checklist Procedures (CP)

Each of these categories (shown in dark green in the example below and in the taxonomy) has many sub-categories (shown in lighter green below and in the taxonomy). The items shown in white are the actual measure guide titles. Taxonomy items in white may apply to both new and existing homes. Taxonomy items shaded in blue refer to guides for existing homes only and are not meant for new construction. The wording of the titles for these guides should make some reference to existing homes or retrofits.

Below is an excerpt of the taxonomy showing the color and numerical identifiers.

Example excerpt of the taxonomy table.

Identifying Keywords

While users can use the search function at the top right of the screen to search on any words they wish to enter, the Solution Center also has a specific keyword list of construction-related terms that are used in the BASC Keyword filter shown on the right side of the screen. Please choose from the Keyword list to identify appropriate keywords for the content you are submitting. Please feel free to suggest additions to the list by contacting Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (basc@pnnl.gov).

Guidance for Submitting Case Studies

If you are submitting case studies, note that there are two kinds of case studies: technology-specific case studies that describe a specific technology or technique and whole-house case studies that describe the whole-house new construction or renovation project. You can use the Word templates linked below for preparing your case studies to submit to NREL or include all of these elements in an unformatted Word file. NREL will use Indesign to format your text and images into a formatted case study like the examples linked here of completed, formatted, Technology Solutions case studies and Whole-House Solutions case studies for new and existing homes.
