Heat pump water heaters (HPWH) use electricity to move heat from the air to water inside a tank instead of generating heat directly. Therefore, they can be two to four times more energy efficient than conventional electric resistance water heaters. To move the heat, heat pumps work like a refrigerator in reverse. Some models can use the same 240-volt electrical wiring as an electric resistance water heater, while others plug into a 120-volt outlet. Installation of a HPWH is very similar to other storage-type water heaters, with a few differences that this tool will help you navigate.

Homeowner benefits include:

  • Significant annual cost savings to homeowners over traditional electric water heaters
  • Plenty of hot water when sized properly
  • Decrease in carbon emissions and improvement in air quality
  • Federal rebates and tax credits, as well as local rebates
  • Dehumidification of surrounding air (especially useful in basement and garage installations)

Installer benefits include:

  • Business model differentiation and revenue stability
  • Increased customer satisfaction and loyalty
  • Access to utility, manufacturer, and distributor partnerships for competitive pricing and promotions
  • Enhanced visibility and marketability
  • Proactive workforce development
